Convention in this instance refers to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), an international agreement. The PCT convention allows an inventor to file an application in one country and preserve rights in other designated countries for a specified time. The countries (called “the contracting states”) party to the PCT Treaty constitute a union for cooperation as to the filing, searching, and examination of applications for the protection of inventions, and for rendering special technical services.
