A patent agent is registered to practice, and authorized to act for or in place of a patent applicant, before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. A patent agent is sometimes referred to as a practitioner or representative and need not be an attorney, but must have the requisite scientific background to take and pass the patent bar.
