16th Annual Music is Art Festival September 8, 2018
The 16th annual Music is Art Festival is happening tomorrow! On Saturday, September 8th, hundreds of bands, dancers, and artists will once again take over the Riverworks complex for a celebration of Buffalo’s creativity.
Erin Gormley, an attorney at Kloss, Stenger, & LoTempio, a board member of Music is Art, and Vice Chair of the Music is Art organization, asked Goo Goo Dolls star Robby Takac about the formation of Music is Art. Robby talked about the past sixteen years of providing WNY communities with access to music, and having some fun along the way:
Erin: What is the best business advice you have for someone starting out in the non-profit industry?
Robby: Do it because you really, truly believe in it, and then keep accurate records.
Erin: What drove you to start Music is Art? What were some of the biggest growing pains early on?
Robby: Music had always been a big part of my life, once I gained some resources and notoriety, helping spread that idea through Music is Art programming and events just seemed like a natural thing to do.
We had no idea what it took to be a legitimate not-for-profit when we began in 2001, so we had a lot of catching up to do early on, but with the help of committed and talented people over the past decade our organization has grown into a legitimate, well rounded collective.
Erin: What drives you to continue to improve and grow Music is Art, and how do you go about doing that?
Robby: We want to continue to see support for the arts and youth programming at the forefront of people’s minds in our community. We have a strong Board of Directors and many committees that meet and discuss moving the organization forward on a regular basis.
Erin: If you didn’t become a musician, what field would you be in? Do you think you would be successful?
Robby: Hmm… Well, maybe an attorney? But probably not a very successful one.
