Iron Man suit Patent Application
Iron Man
Iron Man is an extremely popular superhero. With his sleek robotic suits and amazing weapons, it’s hard to not be impressed by the wonder that is Iron Man. To most of us, being able to don and wear the Iron Man suit would be a dream come true. One person in particular tried to make that dream a reality. This person specifically filed a patent application for an “Iron Man suit.”
Let’s take a look at the application.
The Application
The application’s publication number is US 2013/0145530 and titled (you guessed it) “Iron man suit.” The patent application discloses that the invention is a kind of apparatus or suit made from strong materials, such as steel. Further, the apparatus or suit was stated to be capable of protecting the wearer from projectiles. The suit is said to be powered by some power source and has hydraulic mechanisms, which can help the wearer in pushing or lifting heavy objects. This application seems to cover the Iron Man suit that is seen in the movies and comics.

The Sad News
Unfortunately, this application seems to have been abandoned. Although this specific application for an Iron Man suit is abandoned, there are still some other cool exoskeleton related inventions out there. Let’s take a look at the patents covering these exoskeleton related inventions.
Wearable action-assist device and control program
The abstract of U.S. patent 8,932,241 patent discloses “a wearable action-assist device includes a biosignal detection unit detecting a biosignal from a wearer, an action-assist wearing tool having a drive source supplying a torque acting on the wearer around each joint of the wearer as an axis of rotation, a control unit controlling the drive source to generate the torque according to the detected biosignal, a drive torque estimation unit estimating a drive torque generated by the drive source, a joint-angle detecting unit detecting an angular displacement of the joint, and a parameter identification unit identifying kinetics parameters concerned by substituting the estimated drive torque and the detected angular displacement into an equation of motion of an entire system including kinetics parameters intrinsic to the wearer.”

Terrain adaptive powered joint orthosis
U.S. patent 9,687,377 discloses a “powered device augments a joint function of a human during a gait cycle using a powered actuator that supplies an augmentation torque, an impedance, or both to a joint. A controller estimates terrain slope and modulates the augmentation torque and the impedance according to a phase of the gait cycle and the estimated terrain slope to provide at least a biomimetic response.”

Multi joint orthodynamic rehabilitator, assistive orthotic device and methods for actuation controlling
The summary of the invention for U.S. patent 8,083,694 reads that this an invention for a” portable exoskeleton multi-joint wear on orthotic system that collects data regarding limb movement, displays representations of the data in real time, and modifies current device function based upon such data so as to meet predefined therapeutic treatment parameters with regard to device-actuated movement needs of the limb regarding device-actuated movement, and/or assist limb rotation.”

Lower Extremity Enhancer
Ever need a little help carrying heavy stuff? There is a nifty device disclosed by U.S. patent 7,628,766 that can possibly help. The abstract of this patent reads that this is a device for a “lower extremity enhancer to be worn by a user to enable the user to carry a load includes two leg supports having a plurality of jointed link.”
