Cool and Exciting Disney Patents
Disney is arguably the biggest entertainment company to date. With ownership over Marvel, Star Wars, and so many other franchises, it’s hard to argue that Disney isn’t standing on top of the entertainment business. In addition to producing movies, Disney owns Disneyland, which is probably one of the most beloved amusement parks of all time.
But Disney may be branching out to other areas such as sports and sports entertainment. Disney recently received U.S. patent no. 10,360,713 (‘713 patent) titled “event enhancement using augmented reality effects.”
Let’s see what’s inside the ‘713 patent.
The ‘713 patent brought up certain problems that involve accessibility to sporting events. These problems include the fact that viewing sporting events from home “cannot replicate the immersiveness and immediacy of experiencing a sporting competition in person.” But even if one were to attend a sporting event, there will be certain constraints and issues. One such issue may be that sometimes a seat will be too far from the field or will have an obstructed view. Thus, the invention disclosed in the ‘713 patent may address some of these issues by using augmented reality.
‘713 embodiments
Several embodiments of the invention are laid out in the ‘713 patent. One of the embodiments is in the form of a flow chart and demonstrates how one form of the invention uses augmented reality. The flow chart includes:
- Receiving venue description data that corresponds to an event venue
- Identifying the event venue based on the venue description data
- Identifying an event scheduled to take place at the event venue
- Generating one or more AR enhancement effect(s) for the event based on the event and the event venue
- Rendering the AR enhancement effect(s) on the display during the event
The ‘713 patent is just one of the several many patents currently assigned to Disney. Here’s a list of the other Disney patents that were just recently granted:
Gameplay in a chat thread (10,361,986)
Another cool feature that Disney may unveil in the near future is some way to play games in chat threads. The patent covering this feature is patent no. 10,361,986 and titled “Gameplay in chat thread.” The preamble of the first claim states a “method for using a mobile device to generate a game during a message exchange session with a remote mobile device”

Three dimensional content projection (10,362,300)
Related to augmented reality in a way, this invention is for a system and method to project contents on a moving performer. Disney has always been big in live performances. Now, with this invention called “three dimensional content projection,” which is covered by U.S. patent no. 10,362,300 (‘300 patent), Disney may be able to enhance their live performances even further. The ‘300 patent states that in one of the embodiments of the invention may include “a projection system and method for projecting content onto a moving performer.” It’s exciting to see how Disney may use this invention in the future.

Single shot capture to animated vr avatar (10,311,624)
Another cool Disney invention is laid out in U.S. patent no. 10,311,624 (‘624 patent). Disclosed in the abstract of the ‘624 patent, “are systems and methods configured to generate virtual entities representing real-world users. In some implementations, the systems and/or methods are configured to capture user appearance information with imaging devices and sensors, determines correspondence values conveying correspondences between the appearance of the user’s body or user’s head and individual ones of default body models and/or default head models, modifies a set of values defining a base body model and/or base head model based on determined correspondence values and sets of base values defining the default body models and/or default head models. The base body model and/or base head model may be modified to model the appearance of the body and/or head of the user.”
