Internet Viewing: Algorithms in Action and Reviews for Vincent LoTempio

Algorithms have considerably changed they way internet users see content. While many website visitors may expect to first see a reverse chronological list of content, this is not always the case. Whether you like it or not, many popular websites now have specific algorithms that rank what users see.

A prime example of this algorithm in action is on Yelp, where reviews can be curiously buried in a “not currently recommended” section on the web page. These reviews are not factored into the overall review, but are still able to be accessed at the bottom of the yelp web page.

This can cause a dramatic shift in a Yelp Score as a Phoenix-based restaurant learned. As ABC 15 Arizona recently reported, the restaurant had a 3.5 rating on yelp, and while it had nine 1-or-2-star reviews, the restaurant had 155 4-or-5-star reviews in the “not recommended” section.

In describing the ranking methodology, a Yelp spokesperson said that the automated recommendation software is “engineered to highlight the most useful and reliable content to consumers…to weed out possible fake reviews, biased reviews and unhelpful rants or raves.”

This website’s own Vincent LoTempio also has several hidden view that are found in the “not currently recommended section.” For example, on March 8, 2018, Tracy L. reviewed Mr. LoTempio and wrote:

Mr. LoTempio is very patient, professional and understanding. His knowledge of protecting our idea saved us from major mistakes that might have been made in the moving forward process. We highly, highly recommend his services. His staff was very pleasant and they stayed on point with communication in all areas. When it comes to something you have invested so much in, trust and assurance of knowing what to do, Mr. LoTempio has it covered.”

Although this review may appear to be genuine and helpful, the Yelp reviewing mechanism placed it in the “not currently recommended” section.

Another notable example of algorithm controlled content rankings is on Facebook, which in early 2018 updated its algorithm to prioritize posts from friends an family rather than public posts. Yet as Forbes has recently reported, Facebook engagement has sharply dropped by 50% over last 18 months.

Perhaps as a response to these declining numbers, Facebook has recently been granted a patent titled:

“Selection and Presentation of News Stories Identifying External Content to Social Networking System Users,” which would provide a filter for users to view the news they want to read.

If these changes prove successful, and the Facebook user experience is enhanced, other tech companies that use algorithms to organize content might be tempted to create and patent their own filter.

I am a principal of Cellino & Barnes, PC.   We are one of the largest personal injury firms in the United States.   In our downstate New York offices, including Long Island and Manhattan, we use as our principal telephone number 800-888-8888.   In our upstate offices and throughout NYS we use a variety of local area code 888-8888 numbers.

I’m a lucky guy

Last week I received my first approved patent. This was my first time as a Patentee and the process to me was new and somewhat overwhelming.

Nothing against lawyers but being in business for over 30 years with international sales of expensive equipment I have more than average guy’s experience with lawyer dealings. Most of them, even though are looking out for your interest, they are looking out for their interest more. This is simply not the case with Vince Lo Tempio and Theresa. Great Choice

I came to Mr. Lo Tempio four years ago to patent a game board I was working on. With his help and guidance I not only was able to copyright and patent the product. He also guided me various resources where I was able to create a business plan. I have now not only launched the product and created a brand for the company but have been working with larger distributors such as Walmart and Toy’s R Us. I could not have done it without the help of Vincent Lo Tempio. He is truly a family man and a good person.

Best patent attorney I’ve worked with

I have done many patents over the years and have completed three (one also in-progress) patents with Mr. LoTiempo. He is straightforward, to the point and gets the job done without the usual, well, attorney “price building strategies.” I seriously recommend his patent services, they are the best I’ve found in the Buffalo area.
