Get the Skinny on Your Favorite Wine
Although the much anticipated mandatory nutrient content statement on wine labels has not yet arrived, the TTB has instituted guidelines (.PDF) for wineries voluntary disclosure of nutrient content.
Released just in time for the summer season, the TTB released on May 28, 2013, a ruling offering guidance to the wineries regarding voluntary disclosure of alcohol content, calorie and nutrition information on wine labels that previously was sought by many on internet search engines and dietary programs.
The ruling says that “Truthful, accurate, and specific voluntary statements about nutrient content, including calorie and carbohydrate content, in the labeling and advertising of wines, distilled spirits, and malt beverages are authorized… Serving Facts statements in the labeling and advertising of wines, distilled spirits, and malt beverages are authorized. Truthful, verifiable numerical statements of alcohol content may be included in Serving Facts statements as an option.”
So now whether it be sizzling summer nights or sun drenched summer days, whether you bask in the starlight or the sunshine, you too can bask in the knowledge of the nutrient content of your favorite beverage as well.
